Benriach has surged in popularity in recent years. With Benriach The Original Ten, the distillery aims to spark curiosity for the rest of its range. Whether it’s a worthy whisky for this Speyside distillery, you’ll discover in this review.
The Original Ten is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch whisky matured for at least ten years in bourbon, sherry, and virgin oak casks. It’s the most affordable bottle in Benriach’s core lineup. According to the distillery, this trio of casks delivers a smooth, layered character. In other words: Benriach’s signature style.
The Benriach distillery is 125 years old, founded by John Duff in 1898. Its history is anything but quiet, marked by multiple ownership changes, the latest in 2016 when it was acquired by Brown-Forman, a major drinks producer. Despite this, the brand has built a strong reputation in recent years and continues to rise in popularity.

Box, bottle, and label

The bottle comes in a light blue tube with minimal text. The design is simple and stylish, with a traditional, handcrafted feel. The Benriach logo stands out on the label, and there’s an engraved emblem on the bottle’s neck. Overall, it’s a solid presentation with attractive packaging, excellent for gifting.
The front of the packaging prominently names Rachel Barrie as Master Blender. Barrie is a well-known figure in the whisky world, especially for her work at Glenmorangie as whisky creator and master blender. She has been involved with Benriach whiskies since 2017.

Diverse palette with a bitter edge

On the nose, the whisky gives a fruity first impression, with light fruits like pear and green apple up front, complemented by hints of caramel and honey. While the palate opens soft and sweet with caramel, orange zest, and pear, it quickly shifts to spicier notes with a bitter edge reminiscent of dark chocolate.
On a second sip, a touch of bitterness lingers and the mouth dries quickly. This creates a slightly numbing sensation, with clove notes emerging. The texture feels fairly oily yet relatively thin. The finish is short and fades almost immediately, leaving a warm afterglow.

Conclusion: Benriach The Original Ten Review

Benriach The Original Ten is a solid whisky for the price, from the presentation to the flavor profile. The nose is particularly inviting—you could enjoy it all day. The taste, however, doesn’t quite deliver on what the aroma promises, which is a bit of a letdown.
For newcomers wanting an everyday Speyside Scotch, this Benriach won’t disappoint. More seasoned whisky drinkers may find the flavor profile a touch underwhelming.
