Recently, we
reported on a remarkable new blend that marries Scotch and Indian whiskies. We’re talking about Seven Islands, created by Tilaknagar Industries. Discover the story behind the name in a brand-new
Whisky Names Explained.
The whisky’s full provenance isn’t disclosed, no complete list of the distilleries hiding in the blend, though the regions are named. You’ll find whisky from the Himalayas and the Vindhya range, unmistakably
India. From Scotland, distilleries in Speyside and the Lowlands have chipped in. Or should we say, poured their spirit into the bottle?
Sanaya Dahanukar, marketing manager for Tilaknagar Industries, mentiond the idea behind the unique approach in this whisky:
'With Seven Islands, we wanted to bring a new perspective and style to Indian whisky. It felt like the right way to introduce something distinctive, and a meaningful step forward for us as we expand into the whisky category.'
A nod to the past in every bottle
That still doesn’t explain the name Seven Islands. It’s a direct reference to the company behind it,
Tilaknagar Industries, headquartered in Mumbai.
Here’s the twist: the city itself was formed from an archipelago of seven islands, gradually merged over centuries into a single landmass. This slice of history is thoughtfully brought to life on the bottle.
Bottle design that makes an impression
As reported by
The Spirits Business. They write:
'The brand takes its name from the archipelago of seven islands that once formed the city of Mumbai, Tilaknagar’s home. The islands are referenced in the bottle design with fine cartographic lines, while the converging lines for the bottle’s V-cut neck represent the coming together of Indian and Scottish malts. An anchor motif nods to Mumbai’s maritime heritage.
So the name Seven Islands wasn’t chosen at random, it carries a rich vein of history. Want to learn more about the whisky, from tasting notes to where to buy a bottle? Read our article: A standout new blend of Scotch and Indian single malt whiskies.
