Barrell Craft Spirits Launches an 18-year-old 'Hazmat' Whiskey at an Eye-Popping Proof

What do you get when 18-year-old American whiskey is finished in barrels that once held orange liqueur? Barrell Craft Spirits has just released a bottling that answers that question and it’s a strikingly potent whiskey. In fact, this American nectar is what’s known as a “Hazmat” release.

This limited edition clearly targets collectors and high-proof aficionados looking for something off the beaten path.

The base whiskey was distilled in Indiana, where it went into ex-bourbon barrels for 10 years of aging. That was followed by a second, standout maturation: another 8 years in former Curaçao orange liqueur casks. The whiskey was then transported to Kentucky for bottling.

Such an extended finish in orange liqueur casks is unusual in the world of American whiskey. Distilleries more often opt for sherry, port, or wine casks. While those typically lend sweet, fruity notes, the Curaçao barrels bring a pronounced citrus character. But that’s not the most remarkable thing about this whiskey.

This is what’s known as a hazmat whiskey: one with an extraordinarily high proof, i.e., a very high alcohol content. At 143.1 proof (well above the 140-proof threshold), this bottling lands squarely in that category.

The label is used for extremely strong whiskeys that, due to their high ABV, are subject to special shipping regulations. For enthusiasts, “hazmat” is synonymous with intensity, concentration, and maximum flavor impact. It’s even said that hazmat whiskeys are notably flammable.

Flammable or not, the tasting notes call it full-bodied and powerful. Expect ripe, juicy fruit backed by peppery spice and a lively interplay of sweet and heat.

The influence of the Curaçao casks adds bright citrus accents that stand out even more thanks to the high proof. The result is a rich, almost luscious mouthfeel with a long, warming finish.

With just 200 bottles worldwide, this is a textbook example of an ultra-limited American whiskey release. The combination of long aging, an unconventional cask finish, and hazmat-level proof makes it enticing for both collectors and adventurous drinkers.
