Scandinavia is known for making a considerable amount of whisky, and its popularity has been on the rise in recent years. Scandinavian whisky distilleries are now joining forces to boost the whisky production in the region.
On the 18th and 19th of March, history was made in Copenhagen. Eighteen significant Scandinavian distilleries from different countries gathered with a crucial goal: To kick off a new collaboration surrounding their whisky, marking the birth of the Nordic Whisky Collaboration.

What is the Nordic Whisky Collaboration?

The Nordic Whisky Collaboration (NWC) is a partnership between different distilleries, intending to establish whisky from Scandinavian countries as a category of its own. This is what Anssi Pyysing, founder of the Teerenpeli Brewery and Distillery, explains.
‘We are neighbours who share both history and values, and by coming together, we aim to establish Scandinavian whisky as a category that stands tall among other recognized whisky regions.'
- Anssi Pyysing

Collaboration amongst distilleries will promote growth

The collaboration aims not only to establish whisky as a category on the world stage but also to ensure that participating distilleries strengthen each other.
This can be achieved by sharing insights, collaborating on projects, and through other means. The Nordic Whisky Collaboration also intends to better promote Scandinavian whisky on the global stage.
Jan Groth, head of the Nordic Whisky Collaboration, asserts that this is 'the first step in the evolution of Nordic whisky', and that there are immense opportunities attached to it.
‘The industry has grown tremendously over the past ten years, and now, with a joint approach, we have the opportunity to truly showcase the exciting variety we have to whisky enthusiasts throughout the world.'

Distilleries' collaboration is being further established

Before the collaboration can start in full swing, the organization needs to establish a clear structure and outline its initiatives over the coming year.
It is not yet known which distilleries are participating in the collaboration. Scandinavia has approximately 70 whisky makers who collectively produce 5 million litres of spirit.
Some names are undoubtedly familiar to whisky enthusiasts. The Danish Thy Whisky is well represented in the world, and the whiskies of Teerenpeli can be found in various countries.
