The Balvenie Teams Up with a Sculptor for a special whisky series

The Balvenie has announced a remarkable collaboration. The distillery is joining forces with American artist Daniel Arsham. Together with Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, Arsham is developing the project ‘The Dawn of Our Spirit’. This will be an exclusive whisky collection where traditional whisky-making meets contemporary art, undoubtedly presented in striking packaging.

The collaboration centers on The Balvenie’s famed Five Rare Crafts: barley, coopering, floor malting, copper stills, and the role of the malt master. These crafts have formed the backbone of the Scotch whisky brand for generations and are now given an artistic interpretation by Arsham.

Limited editions and a rare whisky release

Later this year, the project will culminate in a handcrafted whisky collection featuring multiple limited editions and an ultra-rare release. The exact number remains unclear, but given the theme, five editions seem likely.

Each bottle symbolizes one of the Five Rare Crafts and is visually interpreted by Daniel Arsham, renowned worldwide for his futuristic, sculptural artworks. According to The Balvenie, this will be the most ambitious collaboration in the brand’s history.

In addition to the whisky collection, The Balvenie and Arsham will host exclusive experiential events in Asia and the United States. These immersive experiences will celebrate craftsmanship, time, and creativity.

Historic floor maltings take center stage

A key element of the collaboration is The Balvenie’s historic Home Floor Maltings. This traditional floor maltings was brought into use around 1931 and has remained virtually unchanged ever since. As a result, The Balvenie is among a select group of Scottish distilleries that still operate traditional malt floors.

The distillery also grows its own barley and still employs in-house coopers and coppersmiths on site. It’s precisely this blend of tradition and craftsmanship that strongly appealed to Daniel Arsham.

The artist cites the commitment to traditional whisky-making as particularly inspiring. According to Arsham, the collaboration is rooted in a shared respect for time, process, and craft.

Daniel Arsham is internationally known for his signature “eroded” style, where objects appear as if they’ve been unearthed from the future. His work features in major museum collections around the world.

With ‘The Dawn of Our Spirit’, Arsham fuses his vision with whisky, though precisely how remains under wraps. More details will be revealed later this year, along with the unveiling of the first bottles.
