The Glenlivet brings sun‐kissed Provence to Scotland with a distillery‐first whisky release

The Glenlivet has unveiled a new limited edition that marries classic Scotch whisky with a generous splash of the South of France. The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Provence Edition is finished in three different types of French wine casks, including rare Provence Cru Classé casks.

The new whisky is part of The Glenlivet’s Beyond Speyside series, an exploration of ways to weave the distillery’s hallmark Speyside style with influences from beyond the region.

For the Provence Edition, inspiration was drawn from sun-drenched southern France. It goes far beyond a Provençal look for the bottle and packaging—France plays a defining role in maturation.

3 different French wine casks

Guided by Cask Master Kevin Balmforth, a portion of the 12-year-old whisky was finished in three types of French wine casks, including white wine casks from Château Sainte Marguerite in Provence. This estate is one of just 18 domaines awarded the Cru Classé des Côtes de Provence status.

Rivesaltes and Sauternes casks were also used. Each cask type is designed to bring a distinct character to the final whisky. According to the brand, the Château Sainte Marguerite casks add citrus and floral tones, while the Rivesaltes casks lend nutty and spicy notes. The Sauternes casks contribute accents of marmalade and crème brûlée.

Tasting notes The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Provence Edition

The result showcases The Glenlivet’s signature soft, fruit-forward style, layered with ripe orchard fruits, florals, and subtle spice. Tasting notes below:

Nose: White peach in syrup, lemon zest and orange marmalade, followed by coconut, homemade shortbread, toasted almonds, and floral notes.
Palate: Juicy nectarine, ripe pear, and fresh red apple, followed by crème brûlée, marzipan, and white chocolate. Chamomile and warming spices emerge afterward.
Finish: Floral and sweet, with a complex and exceptionally smooth character.

The Glenlivet recommends Comté cheese as a pairing for this whisky. Grilled peaches with honey and rosemary are also said to complement its fruity, floral profile beautifully.

A French touch for the packaging, too

It’s not just the liquid that nods to Provence. For the packaging, The Glenlivet uses lavender tones and warm golden hues, evoking the vineyards, flower fields, and the Côte d’Azur of southern France. The brand’s iconic turquoise also features in the design.

The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Provence Edition is rolling out as a limited edition in selected markets worldwide. The recommended price is around €50, and it’s already on shelves.
