Wolfburn Pentland Whisky Liqueur Review – Highland sweetness with a modern twist

Whisky liqueur can sometimes carry a slightly dusty image, as the after-coffee tipple or a bedtime nip for older folks. Wolfburn now delivers an unexpected whisky liqueur that showcases the character of the Scottish distillery in a lighter guise. Is this the liqueur to bring home?

Wolfburn Distillery in Thurso is known for its balanced whiskies with a maritime influence. With its new release, the whisky maker takes a slightly different path. Instead of a whisky, we get a whisky liqueur. Pentland is approachable and sweet, yet it stays true to its roots.

The liqueur’s name tips its hat to the Pentland Firth, the rugged stretch of sea between mainland Scotland and the Orkney Islands. A fitting choice, as this drink also walks the line between softness and character.

Where many whisky liqueurs lean on spices and pronounced sugary notes, Wolfburn keeps things relatively pure here. The drink is built on Wolfburn single malt whisky and natural ingredients. It’s also non-chill filtered and free from artificial colouring.

At 26% ABV it can’t legally be called whisky, but it comes very close. The result lands somewhere between a classic whisky liqueur and a gentle dessert whisky.

The Pentland bottle looks modern and premium without tipping into over-the-top luxury. Wolfburn keeps the design clean, with a clear focus on an upscale feel. The pairing of dark glass with a fairly minimalist green-and-white label works especially well. It fits the drink’s contemporary character.

In the glass, the liqueur immediately appears rich and full. It’s fairly dark in colour, with a distinctly sweet and creamy aroma. Pentland opens right away with soft vanilla tones and caramel. It brings a gentle bourbon to mind, laced with a hint of pistachio ice cream.

On the palate, the texture is notably soft and creamy. The whisky base is clearly present, but it’s wrapped in a honeyed sweetness with some floral accents. Alongside the honey, light spices and a touch of heather drift in, keeping things sweet and floral.

Every so often, a maritime note peeks through, quite characteristic of Wolfburn’s whisky. Toward the finish this becomes a bit more pronounced, joined by fruit notes and a touch of wood influence.

With the Pentland whisky liqueur, Wolfburn takes a detour, but an intriguing one. What makes this drink compelling is how smooth and easygoing it is, while still radiating Wolfburn’s identity in every sip.

It stays engaging right down to the last drop and truly feels like a “whisky light” you can enjoy any time.
