Glenkinchie a story of swallows
The new whiskyrelease from Glenkinchie has taken the distillery in a slightly different direction. The whiskymaker has not just concentrated on age or cask detail, but has attached a story to its new 30-year-old whisky. The outcome is A Richness of Swallows, a small edition that is as much about location and time as it is about the substance.

The story behind the new Glenkinchie

This release did not begin in the warehouse. It all started with a story. A Swallow has a Journey is a short piece written by John Johnstone, a 15-year guide at Glenkinchie. It is the transition into spring as birds returning to Scotland after their African journey.
The concept remained with the team and gradually influenced the course of the whisky. This is a personal tribute of us all here at Glenkinchie, said Johnstone. It is an ode to the life of the swallows and our 30-year-old single malt, which is adding depth and a sophistication you would not necessarily anticipate at this age.
Most of its life was spent in American and European oak refill casks to mature the whisky. After 28 years of maturation the whisky was combined and married European oak puncheons, which contributed to establishing a balance before bottling.

How does Glenkinchie 30 Year Old taste?

  • Nose: Soft and a little dry, with an underlying sweetness.
  • Palate: Rich and full, light fruit, a hint of citrus, a somewhat perfumed nature.
  • Finish: Sweet, lightly spiced, and honeycomb notes persist.
It is 58.4% ABV; thus, it is old, but it has strength.

A design based on the same concept

The presentation continues with the same theme. The packaging depicts birds flying through a smoky sky over a field of barley, which is also connected to the legend behind the whisky. It does not go too far, but it adds a little more significance to the bottle than a regular release.
Johnstone also said that the team was consulted all the way through, in choosing casks and how the whisky would be packaged.

Another type of 30-year release

Glenkinchie is not the first name that comes to mind when it comes to older Scotch but this release is deliberate. It is not only a matter of age or rarity. It is more inclined towards balance and subtlety, which suits the Lowland style rather well.
It is in the high market at 797 dollars (595 pounds), though not at the extreme end of older Scotch prices. The whisky is available in limited quantities. There are only around 1000 bottles filled. If you want one, you will have to be quick.
