The Islay-based Bunnahabhain Distillery is launching an exclusive single cask investment programme for the first time in its history. This means you can not just own any Bunnahabhain whisky, but a heavily peated Staoisha for example.
For the Scottish distillery, it is not standard to make a peated whisky. In fact, the distillery is known for its unpeated whiskies. With Staoisha, the distillery is opting for a bold course correction, and the cask programme adds an extra layer of interest. That's because it allows you to create your own single cask whisky.

What kind of whisky casks are available for purchase at Bunnahabhain?

Participants in the programme can choose from different cask options. On the Bunnahabhain website the possibilities are lined out.

Where can the purchased whisky casks mature?

The casks mature initially at Bunnahabhain itself on Islay. This happens in the cool and damp dunnage warehouses, where maritime influences and the preservation of peat character take center stage.
Another option is for the casks to be transferred to Deanston on the mainland. Here, the drier climate and the racked warehouses allow for quicker interaction with the wood, which results in sweeter, fruitier tones.

Cask Programme Offers More Benefits

The cask programme isn't limited to just a simple cask of whisky. The minimum maturation period of the whisky is five years, but it can be extended to ten years or more for an additional cost. Insurance and storage are included in the price.
Each buyer is entitled to visit his whisky cask annually and sample it. In addition, everyone enjoys extra perks such as a 15% discount in the distillery shop and online, and exclusive access to the cask sales team.
Thanks to direct purchases from the distillery, complete traceability and ownership assurance are guaranteed — even in the event of a sale or closure of the distillery.
Did you know you can also purchase whisky casks at Spiritfilled? This company has a warehouse in Scotland that you can also visit, complete with an AirBnB. You could certainly make a whole weekend out of it. Via this website, you can find out more about the whisky casks and the warehouse.
