This whisky cask is nearly empty, but the spirit left inside could become legendary

Beautiful things have been happening at Port Ellen for many years, and that sometimes leads to eye-catching whiskies surfacing at auctions. This time, it’s not a single bottle turning heads, but an entire cask. An exceptional cask from the legendary Scottish distillery Port Ellen is being offered at Fine Spirits Auction. Filled in 1979—just a few years before Port Ellen closed its doors: it carries an opening bid of a remarkable 1 million euros. The online auction closes on October 2, 2026.

It concerns Port Ellen cask number 1145, a refill American oak hogshead that was filled with spirit on February 15, 1979. The cask is currently stored at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. The auction is being organized in collaboration with Diageo, the owner of Port Ellen.

A chance to bottle Port Ellen at 50 years old

A notable aspect of the sale is that the new owner does not need to bottle the whisky immediately. The cask may continue maturing at Royal Lochnagar until February 16, 2029. That gives the buyer the opportunity to have an official 50-year-old Port Ellen bottled.

Based on figures from June 2026, the whisky is currently estimated at 51.4% ABV. The cask is expected to yield around 73 bottles. With an opening bid of 1 million euros, that already implies a theoretical value of more than 13,698 euros per bottle: before any further bidding.

The purchase also includes storage, logistical support, and bottling as part of the official Port Ellen Cask of Distinction series.

Very old whisky from the closed era

Port Ellen was founded in 1825 on the Scottish island of Islay. The distillery ceased production in May 1983, making the remaining casks from that era increasingly scarce in the decades that followed.

In March 2024, Port Ellen returned to production under Diageo after more than 40 years. The historic stocks remain clearly distinct from the new output: whisky from the original era can only come from distillations made in 1983 or earlier.

Whisky expert Charles MacLean has tasted the cask and, according to the accompanying notes, described it as exceptionally dark, rich, and highly complex.

Notably, this very cask has changed hands before. In 2022, Cask 1145 was also auctioned, fetching 875,000 pounds at the time. The current opening bid is therefore roughly in line with the previous sale price.
