Amid the skyscrapers of Singapore, a myriad of hidden spots can be found. One such place lies near the historic Raffles Hotel and has connections with Scotland and whisky: The Macallan House Singapore. This is how we momentarily experienced Speyside.
Nestled within a vibrant environment in Singapore, you can find several pristine white buildings. The Raffles Arcade houses a variety of shops selling Rolexes, chic furniture, fashionable suits, and other luxury goods. Amid these shops, there lies an oasis for whisky enthusiasts: The Macallan House Singapore.
While it is completely calm, and the temperature has risen above 30 degrees outside, we step from the heat into a slightly cooler climate. We are warmly welcomed at The Macallan House in Singapore.

A global first

Today, Claire Melitante is our guide, and she leads us on a virtual journey through the Scottish Speyside. She tells us that this branch of The Macallan House is the first of its kind. It emerged in 2020 as a pop-up store for the Scottish whisky brand.
However, then COVID-19 intervened, and people had to think of something different. The Macallan conceived to convert the pop-up store concept after the pandemic, in 2023. It became a permanent outpost of the Speyside distillery.
A significant renovation was announced, with Jamie Fobert transporting the style of The Macallan down to the finest detail to Singapore. The entrance reflects the 200th anniversary of the distillery, featuring various organic, wavy shapes.
Further into The Macallan House, everything on display in various styles reminds of the Speyside whisky maker.

Heightened Senses

The Macallan House represents four elements that all trace back to The Macallan in Scotland. These are the following elements:
  • The fields from where the barley for The Macallan whisky comes from
  • The Spey River
  • The surrounding forests at the distillery
  • The Easter Elchies House
These four elements are brought to life during the different tours, as enthusiasts learn more about the whisky and the Macallan. We prepare to be indulged visually, olfactorily and gustatorily.

The Source of The Macallan

Melitante takes us to a spot that hosts several whisky bottles, including The Macallan Double Cask, where a large glass bell is placed. Our journey through Speyside begins with a crucial element: barley.
When the guide lifts the first bell, strong malty notes rise from the bell, immediately reminding of a barley field. We move to the other side of the room, where another bell can be found. We have not yet left the imaginary barley field. From this bell, aromas of damp earth rise.
The passion of The Macallan guide is infectious as she tells us about the malt, the earth, and then takes us to one of the showpieces in the room: The Macallan Time Space Series: Heart of the Spirit. This whisky stands by the element water, namely the Spey River.

Craftsmanship, Time, Patience, and Vanilla

We move to the next glass bell standing next to another showpiece. We are suddenly face-to-face with The Macallan Six Pillars Lalique Collection, while we savor the sweet scent of vanilla.
These are not just old whiskies, but also wonderful works of art to savor. Melitante compares them to perfume bottles that always exude luxury and, in a way, are small works of art. However, contained inside these bottles is a craftsmanship masterpiece born of patience and time.
The Six Pillars are accompanied by another artwork: a green Onyx-sculpture, created by local artist Nathan Yong. This rare piece is inspired by the M Collection and radiates infinity. Further on, a smaller version of another artwork is our next stop.

A bit of Scotland in Singapore

Another smelling bell awaits us that takes us to the roof of the distillery. A small replica of that roof, complete with the moss on top, is present at The Macallan House. Melitante talks about the distillery’s Angel’s Share and the scent the maturing whisky gives in the warehouses.
Her story is augmented by a combination of scents such as wood with moss and malt tones. This is how it must smell at the distillery in Scotland.
We pause the tour momentarily for a special behind-the-scenes look. Melitante wants to show us something that not everyone gets to see. Within minutes, we are face-to-face with two bottles of The Macallan that could easily drain your savings account: the 81-year old The Reach and the exclusive Horizon whisky.

Examining the Color of Whisky

After the brief interruption, we resume the tour with the last stop being The Macallan Red Collection and the story behind the distillery's significance of the color red.
The story of Alexander Reid is narrated, as we inhale scents of juniper, flowers, and more. Our experience is almost over when the guide shows us a corner with a special activity.
At The Macallan House in Singapore, you can work with a so-called amberometer. This is a kind of indicator with which you can access the shades of The Macallan whiskies.
Through three rotating wheels, you can match the color of previously released The Macallan whiskies. Matched against? Another bottle of The Macallan, of course.

Farewell with Something Special

Just like a tour at The Macallan Distillery in Speyside, we wrap up this sensory experience with a dram. Depending on the tour you book, you get to taste a different dram. We got to enjoy The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old.
But that was not all; we were also surprised with a The Macallan Rare Cask 2024 whisky. Our taste buds were further indulged before we left this small piece of Speyside to return to Singapore.
With the sensory experience still vivid in our memory, just like the taste of the Rare Cask 2024, we eventually headed back to the sun.
