On January 31, Kinrooi once again transforms into the ultimate mecca for
Irish whiskey lovers. Irish Whiskey Wonderland is back for its third edition, and if we can take organizer Gunther Moonen at his word, it promises to be another wonderful, and above all flavorful day. In this article, we’ll explain why this is one festival you absolutely don’t want to miss.
Belgium’s biggest Irish whiskey festival
Irish whiskey is enjoying the spotlight more and more, but nowhere else in Belgium will you find a festival so fully dedicated to
Ireland as in Kinrooi. Irish Whiskey Wonderland pours Irish whiskeys exclusively, with only the occasional exception for a good cause.
The focus is firmly on Irish drams: something Moonen himself has been passionate about for years. You’ll find long-established names at the festival alongside relatively new players. There’s something for everyone to discover.
Cozy festival with great atmosphere
Another reason to go is the vibe. We were exhibitors last year, so we speak from experience when we say this is a genuinely delightful festival to visit. The stands are nicely spread out, with a core in the middle and plenty more to explore all around.
The layout makes it pleasant for visitors to wander through and still have time for a chat with various exhibitors. Because beyond tasting delicious things, it’s the conversations that make it fun. Many people have special stories to share and that’s exactly what makes the whisky world so compelling!
Exclusive festival bottling
As previous editions have shown, Irish Whiskey Wonderland comes with an annual festival bottling. Last year it was a special release from
Silkie, and this year there’s another carefully chosen bottle. This one’s a bit special. As Moonen told Whisky Monkeys in an exclusive comment:
'This year it’s going to be a Clonakilty. A blend of 70% grain whiskey and 30% Pot Still: ABV 55%. It all matured in an ex-stout Middle Ages Cask. We selected it in August and then had 10 random visitors taste it. The verdict was unanimously positive. We’re very curious to hear the reactions.'
- Gunther MoonenFor collectors and enthusiasts, this is a must-have. The whiskey is limited and available nowhere else—exactly what you want from a festival bottling. Make sure you secure this special bottle!
Easy to reach for Dutch whiskey fans
Live in the Netherlands? You’re in luck. The festival takes place in Kinrooi, just across the Limburg border. Driving is your best bet (so bring a designated driver), and you’ll be there in no time. Parking is right at the door, and the fun starts immediately after. So don’t assume that just because it’s a Belgian festival it’s too far for you. In fact, if you’re a true Irish dram devotee, this is a must-visit. There’s no festival in the Netherlands that focuses solely on whiskeys from Ireland.
Meet the people behind the brands
The final reason to attend is to meet the people behind the labels. A big part of Irish Whiskey Wonderland’s charm lies in the personal stories. You’re not just tasting, you’re talking directly to people who work in the industry. Think brand ambassadors, importers, and distillers. That’s something you won’t see at every festival.
These conversations add that extra bit of context and depth to every dram. Last year, for example, Paddy Gilley from Clonakilty was in attendance.
And the price is certainly no barrier. Tickets for Irish Whiskey Wonderland are just 20 euros plus 1.48 in service fees.
