The GlenDronach 56 YO whisky
GlenDronach has dug deep into its archives over its brand new whisky release. The distillery has issued a whisky distilled in 1968 to celebrate its 200th year. It is not just one of their oldest bottles ever, but the oldest yet. And it is made for whisky lovers with a taste for sherry.
The GlenDronach Distillery celebrates its bicentennial year this year. For this special birthday the oldest single malt of the brand was released. The whisky was distilled in September 1968 and is selected by Dr. Rachel Barrie for the occasion.

The most historic GlenDronach release yet

It was first poured into Oloroso sherry casks and that is very much the way The GlenDronach does things. It stayed there for decades. It was transferred once more in 2014, into Pedro Ximénez casks.
The latter stage further enhanced it with time. The casks were later united and the whisky was removed in 2025. It was nearly 57 years old by this time, although it carries a 56-year age statement. Dr. Rachel Barrie, master blender at The GlenDronach. explains the exclusivity of this release. There were only 200 bottles made available for whiskylovers and there is a good reason for that.
'To the To honor this 200-year milestone, The GlenDronach has released exactly 200 bottles, each representing a year of our storied 200-year history. At this level of rarity, the distillery is no longer just distilling spirit; it is archiving time.'

What does it taste like?

  • Nose: Deep sherry immediately. Plush dark fruits, cocoa, and a little rich and sweet.
  • Palate: Here, additional layers appear. Dried fruit, a little spice, all passing slowly, black cherry.
  • Finish: Long, cozy, dark chocolate, and a slight touch of citrus in the end.
It is bottled at its natural cask strength of 44.9% ABV.

Built as a collector’s piece

This Glendronach is presented in a luxury box that fits the whisky. Every bottle is packaged in a custom-made cabinet made of black walnut wood. It is very time-consuming to prepare each one, and you can feel that it is supposed to be something special.
The whisky itself is bottled in a crystal decanter, which is decorated with metal inside. It does not look like something to be opened immediately, but something to be displayed. The price per bottle is 49.000 dollars.
