The renowned Japanese
Karuizawa Distillers is taking the next big step in its ambitious whisky plans, breaking ground on a brand-new Japanese distillery. The new Furaliss Distillery will be built in Furano, further strengthening Karuizawa Distillers’ position in the world of Japanese whisky.
Karuizawa Distillers already operates the Komoro Distillery, located about 10 kilometers from the original site of the old Karuizawa distillery. With that, the whisky maker made a long-awaited return a few years ago. Now it’s time to expand.
From Komoro Distillery to Furaliss Distillery
Karuizawa Distillers has built considerable anticipation in recent years with the Komoro Distillery. Its first whisky is expected in November, and given the maker’s legendary status, enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting its debut.
With Furaliss Distillery, the company is once again committing to a bold, long-term vision. The new site will produce Japanese single malt and allow it to mature under different climatic conditions than those at Komoro.
Furano sits on Hokkaido, a region celebrated for its natural beauty, distinct seasons, and strong local identity. According to Karuizawa Distillers, that very combination creates the opportunity to craft a truly unique style of whisky.
The timing may seem unconventional. The Japanese whisky maker is expanding during what it calls an “economically challenging period.” Koji Shimaoka, president and CEO of Karuizawa Distillers, says he has complete confidence in the path forward. In his view, whisky is one of the few industries where time itself creates value.
Ian Chang sees unique potential in Furano
Ian Chang, former Master Blender at Kavalan who has been with
Karuizawa Distillers since late 2022, is equally excited about the Furaliss Distillery project. Chang has long dreamed of a whisky designed specifically for extended maturation. He believes Furano offers an environment unlike anywhere else in
Japan.
The interplay of climate, nature, and local culture should impart a distinctive character, positioning Furaliss Distillery to become a significant new name in Japan’s premium whisky scene.
First whisky from this Karuizawa distillery will take time
It will be some time before the first whisky from this distillery is ready. Construction is far from complete, and the spirit will mature in cask well beyond three years. Exactly how long has not been disclosed.
